Many interesting and beautiful monuments gracefully decorate streets and squares of Smolensk. These monuments reflect not only important historical pages of Smolensk but also people who glorified our region in different epochs.
The first group consists of the monuments devoted to famous people who were born, who lived and worked in Smolensk, for example, the first cosmonaut Gagarin, composer Glinka, poets Tvardovsky and Isakovsky and many others.
The second group consists of the monuments connected with the heroic defenders of Smolensk in the Patriotic War of 1812. Those monuments can tell you a lot about the great and eventful history of our country.
And the third group of monuments is dedicated to World War II. The Eternal Flame, The Memorial to a Mourning Mother, The Obelisk “The Bayonet” and The Mound of Eternal Glory are important symbols of undying memory of Russian people.
