It goes without saying that the Smolensk Fortress Wall, which is also known as “Smolensk Kremlin”, is the main pride of the city. It was built in 1602, more than four hundred years ago. Originally, the Smolensk Fortress Wall was crowned with 38 towers and was 6.4 km (3.98 miles) long. Now its length is 3 km (1.86 miles) and it has 17 towers. The Wall is 15 feet wide and up to 45 feet high.
From medieval times the Smolensk Fortress was the westernmost boundary of our country and not without reason it was called “the necklace of Russia”. Annually thousands of tourists visit Smolensk, thus no one would come to the city without taking a stroll around the fortress wall.
